This
is a guideline for teaching science from the Christian viewpoint that
God is the great Creator. I believe that a firm foundation in creationism
is the basis of our faith. I accepted Christ as my Saviour without a
clear knowledge of creationism or a Christian worldview. As a Christian
science suddenly made sense. It was no longer a list of bits and pieces
to memorize to pass a test, but seeing the work and intertwinings of
my Creator's hand.
I wanted to start out with a quote from Ruth Beechick's wonderful book,
Genesis: Finding Our Roots:
"The first chapters of Genesis are no doubt the oldest writings
in the world, as we show in some of the studies included here, and their
importance cannot be exceeded. The basis for mankind's thinking is set
in these writings.
These writings answer all the major questions that philosophers wrestle
with. Who are we? Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where are
we going? Is there a God? What is He like? The true answers found in
Genesis form the basic world view of informed and thinking Christians.
Our view of these fundamental questions affects all our thinking, and
only a right view will produce right thinking.
Our answers to these questions not only affect our thinking, they also
affect the way we live. And society's answers affect the way our society
lives. Why is Western society crumbling? It's because we have cast out
the book of Genesis. We no longer believe that life comes from God,
so we do not value life but practice abortion, euthanasia, and suicide
instead. We no longer believe that man is made in the image of God,
so animal "rights" can be higher than man's. We no longer
believe in God, so we ignore His laws. We no longer believe in the Creator,
so we worship His creation rather than Him."
I once watched an interview with one of the world's most wicked men.
A man who hurt so many people the families of his victims said they
would never forgive him, but he found the forgiveness and meaning to
life he had sought all along in Christ. He gave an interview to warn
of the evils of evolution. It was like a light bulb went off in my head
as he spoke. He shared that as a young child he had attended Sunday
School and acknowledged Christ. As a child his parents divorced and
he became lonely and the books at school taught him many lessons. The
one that changed his life was the teaching about evolution. He realized
if God wasn't the Creator his church had taught him and it all happened
by accident, he was now free to do whatever evil desires he was contemplating.
If evolution was true he would never pay for his sins. This is the great
evil and lie of evolution. And this is why the public schools are being
used to corrupt many children's minds. We think our children understand
the fallacy of this teaching. Recently a young man we know who attended
church his whole life decided there is no God. The seeds of the evolution
teaching are at work in his mind because his parents allowed him to
be taught this in public school. They felt he had enough good teachings
in him to fight it, but he has allowed his desires to buy into the big
lie.
In this study I have included quotes from famous scientists. The scientists
who changed the world with their inventions were inspired by their Maker.
These men lacked the scientific equipment, books, computers, etc. we
have to help us, and yet their conclusions were more accurate. Their
conclusions declared the obvious, that the earth and creation were made
by our great Creator. Creation reveals the genius of God's creative
hand. Men are without excuse when it comes to believing in God's existence.
As you go through this study I hope you will see that before this century
and manufacturing, families lived off the land. Man had dominion over
nature and animals and they provided him with his food. The cows provided
milk, cheese and meat. Animals provided transportation and food (in
Genesis 2 we see God kill an animal' Jacob ate venison stew in Gen.
27:7; Exodus 12:5-8 God tells Israel to kill and eat lambs; 1 Kings
8:3 shows how many animals King Solomon killed; Abraham killed a tender
and good calf" to feed the angels who came to visit him; Jesus
ate the Passover Lamb in Mark 14:12, 18; the prodigal son's father cooked
the fatted calf).
We should follow the example of the prophet Jeremiah in chapter 32,
verse 17 as he joyfully proclaimed: "Ah, Lord God! Behold You have
made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched
arm. there is nothing too hard for you!"
Some guidelines to consider while using this outline. This is an outline
of topics that will be added to as good resources appear. So many times
we purchase unit studies, or curriculum only to find it's uninspiring.
With this outline you can use the journal pages on our website and living
books. You can use the book recommendations I have placed at the bottom
of the study, or go to the library and allow your child to help you
choose the books that interest him. The goal is a Christian worldview
and enough information and online links to studies, with book and video
recommendations to help save a homeschooling parent money. Through time
we will add laboratory sheets for making weather charts, seed, animal
and bug classification charts. Sheets to help a child keep track of
whatever they are observing and classifying. Please consider using our
timeline maker and viewing our sample of my space timeline booklet.
I made a table of contents at the front and used the internet to make
the whole booklet, based on the scientists who will be in this study.
You will find a red asterick (*) next to
the Christian inventors. Each inventor or scientist will link to our
website survey. This is helpful for keeping track of who you have studied.
There are as many quotes as I can find to associate with the scientists
(hopefully, through time we will add many more as I find them). The
quotes can be used for your enjoyment, or you can do copywork with them.
Or you can go to one of the handwriting practice websites and print
off the quotes on a practice sheet for your child to practice handwriting.
For each day of the creation week you will find a journal page to place
in your notebook for each day of the week. On this journal page you
can have the child copy their scripture or scientist's quote along with
their thoughts about God's creation. There will be at least two worksheets
for each study. These contain pictures and questions to help the child
consider the magnitude of God's work.
There
are many book, video, and CD suggestions listed in this guide. I have
used many of the suggestions listed, but many are from secular award-winning
lists. This is a guide, not a step-by-step curriculum that tells you
what to do each day. I desire children who can think for themselves,
work independently, explore, and learn on their own without being force-fed.
Before allowing a child to read any of the books listed please go to
google.com and do a search on the title or amazon.com and read some
of the reviews. Then scan the book, or read it through. For the videos
you can check reviews at imdb.com. The software can often be found at
the library for you to review, or childrenssoftware.com often contains
reviews.
There are so many views within the scientific field that even high-rated
books like the DK or Usborne books will often have references to evolution.
The age of the earth is often not in agreement with the views we desire
to teach our children. Parents must be on guard in all areas of life
(even when you hear a sermon you are called to study and show yourself
approved). When I study a topic I usually go to the library and go directly
to the children's section to see what they have on the topic. Since
I will be covering the book with my children I read to them the parts
I feel are pertinent, then they write and draw about that topic. We
often find art books while at the library that will match our study.
This study may turn out to be the, Never-Ending Creation Study, as we
add links we find. Please send in any links that helped you that pertain
to any topics included in this outline. By taking the time to send in
a link and the topic to list it under you could help many moms save
a lot of time and add more information to this study.
Through time I hope to add many notebook activities and coloring pages,
etc. to help make the studies more complete. For now we will end with
a Dwight Eisenhower quote I enjoyed:
"It takes no brains to be an atheist. Any stupid person can deny
the existence of a supernatural power because man's physical senses
cannot detect it. But there cannot be ignored the influence of conscience,
the respect we feel for the Moral Law, the mystery of first life..or
the marvelous order in which the universe moves about us on this earth.
All these evidence the handiwork of the beneficent Deity. That Deity
is the God of the Bible and Jesus Christ, His Son."
