History

History is an account of all human actions, thoughts, inventions, discoveries and dreams. All subjects relate to history, therefore when studied chronologically and used as core material, the student finds order to the knowledge he is obtaining in all his other subjects.

The Bible should be considered a history book and taught, as God's Word, that it should be considered first and foremost over all other history texts. This is true according to Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

To study history chronologically time periods are divided into four groups.

  • Ancients - Creation to 400 AD
  • Medieval/Early Renaissance - 400 AD to 1600 AD
  • Late Renaissance - Early Moderns - 1600 - 1850 AD
  • Modern Times - 1850 to present

History notebooks could include outlines, questionarres of famous people and their ideas, inventions or explorations, wars and conflicts, as well as regional information and politics. Art and architecture of the period could be explored and samples could be included in the notebook. We enjoy watching historical movies which depict the time period we're studying. A brief write up of the movie can be entered along with a picture.

Timelines give an excellent overview of a time period and help put history in perspective. Timelines are a great asset to your history notebook and are lots of fun putting together.

Historical fiction and biographies are great resources for bringing a time period alive. A brief write up of books read can be included in the notebook.

We have a collection of surveys (see menu to the right) that can be filled out and added to your notebook. They ask the main questions, who, what, when, where, why and how. Maps and pictures of the person, place or invention could also be added with each of these.
